Abstract
The vast majority of toothaches result from odontogenic abnormalities. Occasionally, however, pain is felt in teeth or
supporting structures for which no odontogenic abnormalities can be found. In addition, the behavioral pattern or historic
features may be inconsistent with odontogenic pain. When this situation is encountered, other conditions should be
considered. They are nonodontogenic toothaches of maxillary sinus/nasal mucosa origin, myofascial origin, neuropathic
origin (trigeminal neuralgia and atypical odontalgia), vascular origin, cardiac origin and psychogenic origin. Neuropathic pain is caused by abnormalities within the neural tissues and can occur in the absence of noxious stimulation of peripheral nerves. Neuralgia is one form of neuropathic pain and is characterized by recurrent episodes of suden bursts or paroxysms of severs, shock-like pain that last for seconds to minutes and then disappear. This is a case report about trigeminal neuralgiaform toothache of neuropathic origin recognised by dental treatment in
mandibular molar.
